I. Sound familiar?

You're not imagining it

The tool that broke

"I paid extra for the big name. The handle came off the first time I used it."

The receipt they asked for

"It said lifetime warranty. At the counter, they wanted a receipt from years ago."

The set I barely use

"I bought the 300-piece set. I use a handful of pieces. The rest just sit in the case."

Each one cost you twice: once at the register, and again when you bought it over.

That was never your fault. The names changed, the rules changed, and nobody told you.

II. Check your drawer first

That broken tool in your drawer may be worth a free new one.

Broken Craftsman ratchet or wrench?

Craftsman's hand-tool warranty says no proof of purchase required. You can swap it at a store that sells Craftsman, like Lowe's or Ace. The book shows which Craftsman lines that covers.

New ratchet: $34.98Swap: $0

Husky, Kobalt or Harbor Freight hand tool?

Some swap right at the counter. The book shows which ones, and which want a receipt.

Bought it secondhand or got it from Dad?

One brand replaces it for any owner, with no receipt, and pays the shipping.

Before you buy a new one, check the Warranty Cheat Sheet. It could save you the whole price.

Nothing broken, just a drip or a running toilet? The book walks you through 18 everyday house fixes with the tools you already own.

III. The money math

Guessing costs more than you think.

Every time you guess at the tool store, you pay for it. Here are three real cases from the book, side by side.

The old way

Guessing at the store

The famous-name ratchet−$206
A plumber for a leaky faucet−$270
The protection plan at the register−$13
Three jobs−$489

The smart way

With the book read first

Protection planThe warranty already covers it$0
This book, one time$27
Three jobs$97 to $137

→ You keep

Ratchet$146
Faucet$220 to $260

Three jobs: you keep about $350 to $390.

That's after the $27 for the book.

One wrong tool costs more than this book.

A note from Lyle

If you came from one of my videos, thank you. This book is everything I couldn't fit in them.

Here's how I made it. I read the warranty pages most folks never open, and copied down the exact words, like the five on Craftsman's page that can save you the price of a new ratchet. I checked the store prices at Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and Harbor Freight on the same day, so the numbers line up. I pulled the independent test results, and I looked up what used tools really sell for on eBay.

Then I cut it down to plain answers in big print.

I wrote it for the fellow standing in front of three ratchets, wondering which one is worth his money. I hope it saves you more than it costs.
